So you’ve been posting to Facebook for the last 4.5 years and you’d like a copy of all your photos (probably because that’s the only place they exist…) Or you want a record of all your timeline posts, comments or instant message on Facebook since day one… How about if you are deleting your profile for good? Don’t do anything before you download your content first, it could be your last chance!
Unbeknownst to many Facebook users, they actually make it really easy to download a giant archive of everything you ever posted on their site! Here’s how:
Step 1: Click the little triangle in the right corner of you profile and select the “Settings” option.
Step 2: Click the link at the bottom of the window that says “Download a copy of your Facebook data”.
Step 3: Click the green button that says “Start My Archive” and then click the blue button to confirm that you want to request your download.
Step 4: Wait for the email from Facebook notifying you that the download is ready and containing the link for the downloadable archive. It could take a while if you’ve been a very active user for a long time.
Step 5: Open up the .zip file containing your content folder. It’ll be named “facebook-yourusername”. Inside you’ll find nested directories containing all your photos, videos, profile info, messages, events, etc, etc. – everything you’ve posted on FB since the day you joined!
While Facebook makes it easy to download this info, just remember that you can’t permanently delete the info off of Facebook, even if you delete your profile! Facebook keeps your data forever and reserves the right to do whatever they want with it -this is one of the reasons I encourage NOT uploading any content to FB. Still, at least you can get access to it, and you’ll probably be amazed at how much you’ve contributed to FB over the years.
